African Diasporic Connections in the Americas: Toni Morrison in Brazil

Admired throughout the world, Toni Morrison’s powerful voice resounds in special ways Brazil, where she conducted part of her research for Beloved –a novel considered an interrogation about legacy slavery countries like Brazil and USA. Initially labeled «politically correct» by Brazilian media, works have finally achieved great visibility twenty-first century thanks to translations, a wide readership increasing academic attention. In fact, Afro-Brazilian women writers, literary critics, historians, cultural workers reached unprecedented recognition recent decades, along with belated embrace Morrison other Black authors. This essay relies on feminist, diasporic decolonial thinking investigate how writing connects ongoing process racial awareness empowerment as well writer Conceição Evaristo.
